The K53 learner’s test is not marked as one overall score. It is split into three sections, and you have to pass every section on its own. A great score in road signs cannot make up for failing the rules of the road.
The three sections
| Section | Questions | Correct answers needed |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle controls | 8 | 6 |
| Road signs, signals and markings | 28 | 23 |
| Rules of the road | 28 | 22 |
That is 64 questions in total. The K53 manual notes that the number of questions and pass marks can change from time to time, so check with your testing centre when you book.
Which licence code
- Code 1, motorcycles: from age 16. Until you are 18 you may ride only a motorcycle of 125 cc or less. A motorcycle learner’s licence does not allow you to carry a passenger.
- Code 2, light motor vehicles (3 500 kg or less): from age 17.
- Code 3, heavy motor vehicles: from age 18.
With a code 2 or code 3 learner’s licence you may drive only under the direct supervision of someone who holds a driving licence for that class of vehicle.
Applying
Apply at a driving licence testing centre (DLTC) on form LL1. Take:
- two identical black and white or colour photographs;
- your identity document and a copy of it;
- a medical certificate on form MC if you are 65 or older; and
- the test fee for your province.
The DLTC gives you a date and time for the test. Once you pass, your learner’s licence is valid for 24 months.
How to prepare
- Study each section separately: the rules, then signs, then the controls diagram.
- Practise each section on its own until you score comfortably above its pass mark.
- Sit the mock exam, which uses the same 8, 28 and 28 split and shows your score for each section against its pass mark.
- Go back to whichever section scored lowest, and repeat.
