Breakdowns and warning triangles: the 45-metre rule

2 min readUpdated 13 October 2026

A broken-down vehicle in the road is a hazard, especially at night or just over a rise. The rules on emergency warning signs, usually called warning triangles, come up often in the learner’s test because they include clear numbers.

Who must carry a triangle

Every heavy motor vehicle (a GVM of more than 3 500 kg), goods vehicle, minibus and bus must carry at least one emergency warning sign. Motor cars, ambulances and motorcycles are excluded from this rule, although many cars come with a triangle and it is sensible to carry one. In a combination of vehicles, the triangle for the trailer may be carried in the towing vehicle.

Where to place it

When a vehicle is stationary on the roadway of a public road, the driver must display at least one triangle:

  • at least 45 metres from the vehicle, in the direction that traffic is approaching from;
  • about as far from the edge of the road as the centre of your vehicle is;
  • with the reflective side facing approaching traffic.

You do not need to display it when you are stopped in a place marked for loading, when a sign or a traffic officer told you to stop, when you are held up by other traffic and are still in the driver’s seat, or during a state or municipal function.

What to do when you break down

  1. Signal and move as far off the road as you safely can.
  2. Switch on your hazard warning lights.
  3. Apply the parking brake and switch off the engine.
  4. Get passengers out on the side away from traffic and keep them well off the road.
  5. Walk back at least 45 metres, facing oncoming traffic, and place the triangle.

On a freeway you may stop only for a reason beyond your control, such as a breakdown, and pedestrians are not normally allowed. Stay well away from the traffic lanes while you wait for help.
