Scholar patrols near schools: the TW305 sign and when you may go

2 min readUpdated 13 October 2026

Scholar patrols help children cross busy roads near schools, using hand-held stop signs. Because children move suddenly and are hard to see, the rules around patrols are strict.

The scholar patrol ahead sign (TW305)

TW305 is a temporary sign used on roads near schools while a patrol is operating. The action from the manual: slow down and look out for a stop sign displayed by the scholar patrol, and look out at all times for children who may suddenly cross the road.

At the crossing

  • When a patrol member shows the stop sign, stop behind the line, as you would at any stop sign.
  • Move off only when the stop sign has been removed and it is safe. Some children may still be finishing their crossing.
  • Never overtake a vehicle that has stopped at the crossing. You might not see a child stepping out in front of it.

Other signs near schools

  • Children warning sign: look out for children crossing, or about to cross, the road.
  • Pedestrian crossing ahead: be ready to stop for anyone on the crossing or about to step onto it.
  • Speed humps and lower speed limits are common near schools. Treat the limit as a maximum, and drive slower when children are around.

Driving past schools

At drop-off and home time, expect children to run out between parked cars, buses and taxis to stop suddenly, and parents to pull out without looking. Slow down early, keep your hand off the hooter and give way to children even when they are not on a crossing.
