Parking and stopping: the signs and distances to know

2 min readUpdated 13 October 2026

Parking and stopping questions are full of numbers, which makes them easy to learn and easy to mix up. Start with the two signs, then learn the distances.

Stopping prohibited (R217)

No stopping or no parking?

  • Stopping prohibited (R217): do not stop at all, except to obey a traffic light or a traffic officer, or to avoid a collision. A red no-stopping line on the road may back it up.
  • Parking prohibited (R216): do not park at any time of the day or night. You may still stop briefly, for example to let a passenger out.

Wherever stopping is not allowed, parking is not allowed either.

Where you may not stop

  • In a tunnel or subway, on a bridge, or within 6 m of one.
  • Within 9 m of the side you approach a pedestrian crossing from.
  • Within the railway reserve at a level crossing.
  • On the right-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.
  • Alongside another vehicle on a road less than 9 m wide.
  • Within 6 m of where the road narrows.
  • Next to an excavation or obstruction, if stopping would block or endanger traffic.
  • Anywhere a sign prohibits it, or where your vehicle would be a danger or an obstruction.

Where you may not park

  • Within 1.5 m of a fire hydrant, on the same side of the road.
  • Where your vehicle would hide a road traffic sign, block a driveway or stand on the pavement.
  • In an urban area: within 5 m of an intersection, within 9 m of a pedestrian crossing, over the sensor of a traffic signal, on a road less than 5.5 m wide, on a traffic island, or with your left wheels more than 450 mm from the kerb.
  • Outside an urban area: on the roadway itself, or with any part of the vehicle within 1 m of the edge of the roadway. Use the shoulder or pull right off the road.

Leaving your vehicle

Apply the parking brake and switch off the engine before you walk away. Leaving a vehicle unattended with the engine running is not allowed.
