Cyclists on the road: the W309 sign and passing safely

2 min readUpdated 13 October 2026

Cyclists are easy to miss and have no protection in a crash. The K53 test checks that you recognise the cyclist warning sign, know the signs that ban or reserve road space for cycles, and know how to pass a cyclist safely.

The pedal cyclists sign (W309)

W309, or TW309 when it is temporary, warns that there can be cyclists ahead. The action from the manual: slow down and look out for cyclists using or crossing the road for the next 2 km.

Other cycle signs and markings

  • Pedal cycles prohibited (R219): cyclists may not go past this sign. Drivers should still look out for cyclists who ignore it.
  • Pedal cycles and pedestrians prohibited (R220): the same rule for cyclists and people on foot.
  • Reserved for pedal cycles: a reservation sign showing a bicycle means only cyclists may use that lane or path.
  • Cycle crossing markings: guidance markings that warn you of cyclists crossing, or wanting to cross, the road.

Pedal cycles are not allowed on freeways, so expect them on almost every other kind of road.

Passing a cyclist

  • Slow down and wait until you can see far enough ahead to pass without forcing the cyclist or oncoming traffic to swerve.
  • Pass on the right with plenty of side space. Cyclists often move out to avoid potholes, drains and debris.
  • Move back to the left only once you are well clear of the cyclist.
  • Do not hoot unnecessarily. A sudden hoot can startle a rider into a fall.

Other moments to watch for cyclists

  • Before you turn left, check your mirror and blind spot. A cyclist may be riding up on your left.
  • Before you open a door next to traffic, look behind you.
  • At night, cyclists without lights are very hard to see. Slow down on unlit roads.
